UJ metallurgy students get a closer look at mining

UJ Metallurgy students experienced mining first-hand during an educational visit to Leeuwpan.

How do we prepare tomorrow’s mining professionals? By opening our operations and giving students the opportunity to experience mining first-hand.

Leeuwpan Mine recently welcomed a group of Metallurgy students from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) for an educational site visit, giving them first-hand exposure to coal mining operations, mineral processing and the important role metallurgy plays throughout the mining value chain.

The students toured key operational areas, meeting technical specialists and seeing the technologies, processes and safety standards that keep the mine running every day. Experiencing a working mine brought their studies to life and gave them a clearer understanding of the profession they are preparing to enter.

The visit forms part of UJ’s commitment to giving students meaningful industry exposure while strengthening the connection between academic learning and the realities of the workplace. By opening our operations to future professionals, we are helping inspire the next generation of mining talent, while showcasing the wide range of careers that contribute to a modern mining operation.

Why this matters: The future of our industry depends on the people who will lead it next. By welcoming students onto our sites and sharing what we know, we help prepare the next generation of engineers, metallurgists and mining professionals for successful careers.

Experiencing these activities in a working mine brought their academic studies to life and gave them a clearer understanding of the profession they are preparing to enter.
