Investing in tomorrow’s problem solvers

Belfast empowers Foundation Phase teachers to strengthen mathematics learning.

Strong foundations shape bright futures. Just as literacy opens the door to reading and communication, numeracy shapes learning across every subject. Belfast Mine, through its partnership with Mountain Reach Technologies, is supporting Foundation Phase educators build those foundations by making mathematics more engaging, practical and accessible for young learners in the Emakhazeni Region in Mpumalanga.

Training sessions were held at Ukhwezi Primary School and Mpilonhle Primary School, where Foundation Phase (Grades 1 to 3) educators explored practical classroom techniques to strengthen numeracy, encourage learner participation and build confidence from an early age. As schools entered the third term, the focus shifted to putting these new teaching methods into practice, helping lay stronger foundations for lifelong learning.

Why this matters: When teachers are empowered, learners benefit. By investing in quality education from the earliest grades, Belfast Mine is helping young learners develop the confidence, critical thinking and numeracy skills they need to thrive in school, and beyond.

By making mathematics more accessible, enjoyable and meaningful, the programme aims to build learner confidence, encourage critical thinking and foster a positive attitude towards mathematics from an early age.”
