Respect starts with us speaking out

We all play a role in creating a respectful workplace where everyone feels safe to speak up.

What does a respectful workplace look like? It’s one where everyone feels safe to speak up, ask questions, raise concerns and do their best work.

Recently, we’ve seen an increase in reports of shouting, intimidation, bullying, harassment, victimisation and other behaviours that undermine our culture. Too many incidents were only reported after continuing for some time, often through the anonymous Fraud and Ethics Hotline.

Exxaro is taking decisive action. Every reported case of bullying, harassment or victimisation will now be escalated to the CEO and Executive Committee within 24 hours.

Speak up before it escalates

Too often, inappropriate behaviour continues because people assume someone else will report it or people question whether the behaviour is serious enough to report. Speaking up early can stop harmful behaviour, support colleagues and help create a safer workplace for everyone.

If you experience or witness inappropriate behaviour, report it through the appropriate channels:

Why this matters: Respect is built through the choices we make every day. Speaking up when something isn’t right, supporting one another and treating everyone with dignity helps create a workplace where people feel safe and able to do their best work.

Every reported case of bullying, harassment or victimisation will now be escalated to the Executive Committee within 24 hours.

Know the signs

Our Workplace Harassment Policy makes it clear that unacceptable behaviour goes beyond physical aggression.

  • Bullying includes intimidation, passive-aggressive behaviour, exclusion, malicious gossip, sarcasm, deliberate embarrassment and cyberbullying.
  • Harassment is any unwanted conduct that undermines a person’s dignity or creates a hostile, intimidating or offensive work environment. It can be physical, verbal or psychological and may occur once or repeatedly.
  • Victimisation is treating someone unfairly because they exercised their rights or raised a concern.

We all have a role to play to help create a safe and respectful workplace:

  • Treat everyone with dignity and respect.
  • Challenge ideas, never people.
  • Avoid gossip, exclusion and sarcasm.
  • Support colleagues experiencing inappropriate behaviour.
  • Speak up early.
  • Don’t assume someone else will speak up.
