Exxaro supports rhino conservation at Zinave, creating lasting impact for nature and communities.

Restoring biodiversity takes commitment, collaboration and a long-term view of the impact we want to create. Through our partnership with Peace Parks Foundation and Mozambique’s National Administration for Conservation Areas (ANAC), we are helping restore wildlife and biodiversity at Zinave National Park, one of Africa’s inspiring conservation recovery stories.

The latest milestone saw nine female white rhinos successfully relocated to Zinave, bringing the park’s white rhino population to 39, alongside 22 critically endangered black rhinos. Together, they now form Mozambique’s first viable founder populations of both species in a national park, with both already breeding successfully.

The rhino translocation forms part of the remarkable recovery of Zinave National Park. Once known as the “silent park” after years of conflict stripped the landscape of its wildlife, the park has welcomed back more than 2 400 animals across 16 species since 2015, transforming it into Mozambique’s first Big Five national park. The milestone reflects Exxaro’s Sustainable Growth and Impact (SG&I) strategy in action, demonstrating how long-term partnerships can restore biodiversity, strengthen ecosystem resilience and create lasting environmental impact.

Beyond conservation, the park’s recovery is supporting tourism, creating local livelihoods and generating new opportunities for surrounding communities, demonstrating how environmental stewardship creates lasting value for both people and nature.
