Lephalale Solar Plant powers our energy future

The Lephalale Solar Plant marks a major milestone in Exxaro’s energy transition.

The official opening of the Lephalale Solar Plant(LSP) marked an important milestone in Exxaro's decarbonisation strategy, advancing our transition to cleaner energy and a more sustainable business.

Developed by our renewable energy business, Cennergi, and located adjacent to our Grootegeluk Complex, the 68MW behind-the-meter solar facility will generate approximately 176GWh of renewable electricity each year. By supplying around 30% of Grootegeluk's annual electricity demand, the plant will strengthen energy security, reduce Scope 2 emissions by approximately 17% and lower electricity costs by around R100 million every year. The project shows how we’re investing in practical solutions that benefit our business, our communities and South Africa’s energy future.

The celebration brought together employees, government representatives, community leaders, traditional authorities, project partners and industry stakeholders to reflect on what has been achieved since construction began in 2023. In addition to the renewable energy benefits, the project created more than 800 employment opportunities during construction, with nearly 70% of those roles filled by people from our host community of Lephalale. It has also supported local suppliers, education and skills development.

The plant demonstrates what becomes possible when the capabilities of our minerals and energy businesses come together around a practical business need.
