PIT engineers celebrate GCC success

Exxaro’s next generation of engineers reached a major professional milestone in 2025.

A proud milestone was recently celebrated across Exxaro’s engineering community as current and former Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in the Professional in Training (PIT) programme successfully completed their Government Certificate of Competency (GCC) examinations.

The GCC remains one of the most respected professional qualifications in the mining and engineering industry, recognising technical competence and readiness to take on greater engineering responsibility under the Mine Health and Safety Act. For many engineers, it represents years of disciplined preparation, workplace learning and practical experience gained across Exxaro’s operations.

The achievement also reflects the strength of Exxaro’s engineering development environment and the role structured training programmes play in building capable technical leadership for the future. As more PIT engineers prepare for upcoming examination sittings, the recent success stories continue to motivate and inspire the next generation of engineers entering the profession.

Beyond technical achievement, the GCC success highlights Exxaro’s broader commitment to investing in people, developing scarce skills and strengthening the long-term capability needed to support safe, efficient and innovative mining operations.

Top Left to Right: Brenden Pillay (Principal Engineer, Mechanical and Co-ordinating Mentor for Mechanical Engineering PITs), Benny Tshoteli, Doctor Matheba, Keamogetswe Mpofu, Scott Tebele, Seeralan Chinaboo (Principal Engineer, Electrical and C&I and Co-ordinating Mentor for Electrical Engineering PITs),
Bottom Left to Right: Donald Mathabela, Katlego Mokwena, Edzani Muswede, Obijar Khumalo

Why this matters: Developing strong technical capability helps strengthen operational excellence, innovation and safety across the business while preparing the next generation of engineering leaders for Exxaro and the broader mining industry.

Their success strengthens the engineering profession and builds the next generation of technical leadership.
