Matla agreement secures long-term energy supply

Exxaro and Eskom signed a long-term agreement reinforcing energy security and operational continuity.

Exxaro and Eskom signed a new long-term Coal Supply Agreement (CSA) between Matla Mine and the Matla Power Station, reinforcing a strategic partnership that has supported South Africa’s electricity generation for more than 40 years.

The original agreement between the two entities began in 1983. The newly signed CSA came into effect on 1 April 2026 and will run until 30 November 2043, supporting continued coal supply to the power station, while maintaining operational continuity at Matla Mine.

The agreement follows Eskom’s investment in the Matla Life of Mine expansion project, which strengthens the mine’s ability to sustainably supply coal for the remainder of its operational life. Leaders from both organisations described the agreement as an important milestone in supporting South Africa’s energy stability during a period of transition and growing electricity demand.

Beyond electricity generation, Matla Mine continues to play an important role in Mpumalanga through employment, education support, enterprise and supplier development, and infrastructure initiatives across surrounding communities.

Why this matters: The agreement provides long-term operational certainty for Matla Mine while helping support South Africa’s energy stability, economic growth and continued investment in surrounding communities.

This agreement marks an important milestone in our long-standing partnership with Eskom.”
