FUNN@WORK: building culture through connection

Small moments of collaboration and connection are helping build a more human-centred workplace across Exxaro.

At Exxaro, culture belongs to everyone. Through FUNN@WORK, the business continues bringing its Human-First philosophy to life in simple but meaningful ways that strengthen connection, belonging and teamwork across operations and departments.

FUNN stands for Functional Understanding Not Necessary – a reminder that who we are matters more than the role or function we belong to. Since launching last year, the initiative has created opportunities for employees to connect beyond titles and structures, helping build a workplace where people feel seen, heard and valued.

Why this matters: Pass it on activation at Matla.

FUNN@WORK is more than a monthly activity. It is culture in action. That’s why each month introduces a new theme, designed to encourage collaboration, appreciation and human connection. January’s Pass-It-On Rule focused on acts of kindness and encouragement, while February’s Share the Care Appreciation Challenge celebrated colleagues who make a positive difference in the workplace. In March, Everyone Has a Place gave employees a platform to share what belonging at Exxaro means to them, and April’s Great Exxaro Eggescape brought teams together through a fun, high-energy treasure hunt focused on teamwork and oneness.

While light-hearted in approach, the impact has been meaningful. FUNN@WORK continues to strengthen morale, spark collaboration and reinforce the idea that culture is built in the everyday moments employees share together.
