My Exxaro Journey
From graduate to HR professional
In this refreshed edition of XXplore, we are creating more space for authentic employee storytelling by sharing personal reflections, career journeys and lived experiences from our people across Exxaro.
Melvy Mabona reflects on a journey of growth within Exxaro.
"My journey with Exxaro began just two weeks after completing my National Diploma in Human Resources Management. I was invited to interview for the position of Admin: Bursar – a call that became one of the defining moments of my career. Even as a young graduate recovering from the intensity of studying, I knew I could not let the opportunity pass me by."
"Starting my career at Exxaro felt like a full-circle moment. Growing up in Lephalale, with my father working in mining, joining Exxaro was more than just employment, it was the realisation of a childhood dream. I started at the GROVOS Training Centre, where I gained valuable exposure to Human Resource Development. In 2012, I was appointed permanently, which allowed me to deepen my experience in learner grants, training coordination and supporting future talent development."
"When an opportunity became available at Arnot Coal, I applied for the role of HR Officer and was successfully appointed. My time at Arnot broadened my understanding of mining operations, especially underground mining, and introduced me to the production language of Fanakalo. It was a period of significant growth both professionally and personally."
"Following the closure and retrenchment process at Arnot, I was fortunate to secure an opportunity at Grootegeluk. Later, after the plant fire incident, I continued my journey within the HR function, where I still serve today. Along the way, I also completed my BCom Degree in Human Resource Management through Mancosa."
"Looking back, every operation, role and experience has strengthened my passion for people and service. Each chapter has shaped my commitment to building a workplace where employees feel supported, valued and empowered."
