Travel Safe this long weekend
– Khetha Ukuphepha
Whether you’re travelling far or staying nearby, road safety starts with smart planning and alert driving. Here’s how you can protect yourself and others on the road:
Plan your trip with a Journey Management Plan.
Check your vehicle – tyres, lights, brakes, and fog lights must be in good condition.
Know the weather – delay your trip if visibility is poor or conditions are unsafe.
Select the safest route, avoiding pothole-prone roads.
Start after sunrise and arrive before sunset.
Schedule rest breaks every 2 hours or 200km to avoid fatigue.
Slow down and keep your distance – especially in misty or foggy conditions.
Use headlights, not brights, and only use hazard lights when stopped.
Avoid sudden moves – signal early and drive cautiously.
If you can’t see clearly, don’t risk it. Pull over safely and wait it out.
Ensure your windscreen and fog lamps are clear.
Use the edge of the road as your guide, not the centre line.
Be extra patient – everyone’s visibility is reduced.
