Environmental stewardship sits at the heart of Exxaro’s Sustainable Growth & Impact (SG&I) strategy, because a thriving future depends on a thriving planet. In 2025, Exxaro deepened its commitment to responsible mining and environmental care. From advancing renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions to restoring ecosystems and educating future generations, our environmental actions reflected a clear truth: when nature thrives, our business, communities, and future thrive too.
Here are some of the ways we reinforced our commitment to a future where business performance and environmental responsibility go hand-in-hand.
Restoring nature, renewing ecosystems
Mafube transformed a former mining area into a thriving wetland, restoring natural water flow, reintroducing indigenous vegetation and working with environmental experts to ensure long-term ecological balance. With wildlife returning to the site, the project stands as a powerful example of responsible rehabilitation and Exxaro’s commitment to leaving nature stronger than we found it.
Inspiring young environmental stewards
Leeuwpan Mine teamed up with Swartklip Combined School for a Wetland Clean-up, engaging learners in hands-on conservation while teaching them about the role wetlands play in water purification, biodiversity and climate resilience. The campaign included a clean-up activity and the donation of dustbins to support better waste management, helping to embed sustainable habits in the next generation.
Strengthening water security through partnership
Belfast Mine joined forces with business partners, local mines and the Emakhazeni Local Municipality to provide water storage tanks to communities facing ongoing supply challenges. Responding to a municipal call to action, the team mobilised resources quickly, demonstrating the power of collaboration in addressing essential needs. The initiative supports long-term water access and reflects Exxaro’s commitment to improving quality of life and building resilient, thriving communities.
Driving low-carbon innovation
Grootegeluk unveiled its first fully converted electric vehicle, a critical step in reducing emissions from operational fleets. With fast charging, regenerative braking and sustainable engineering, the pilot marks the beginning of a greener, smarter transport future on our mines.
