Thriving learners, thriving futures

In 2025, Exxaro deepened its commitment to education – one of the most powerful levers for long-term social and economic transformation and a key part of our SG&I Strategy. Across every region, our education-focused initiatives share a single purpose: to eliminate barriers, unlock potential and build strong, skilled, confident young leaders who will shape the industries of tomorrow. From early childhood development to digital access and career guidance, our programmes ensure young people have the resources, support and opportunities they need to grow into tomorrow’s engineers, leaders and innovators.

Expanding access at Nelsonskop Primary

Grootegeluk Mine handed over four new classrooms and a 1 000 capacity hall to Nelsonskop Primary, easing severe overcrowding caused by Lephalale’s rapid population growth. The investment, aligned to our SLP commitments, also includes WiFi rollout in 26 schools and support for 44 ECD centres, ensuring learners have the space, tools and digital access needed to succeed.

Restoring dignity through learner support

Grootegeluk’s annual hygiene drive brought essential personal-care items to 863 learners across Lephalale. Through donations from employees, partners and unions, the initiative helped restore dignity and confidence, ensuring learners start the school year feeling supported and ready to learn.

Investing in academic excellence

Six top-performing Waterberg learners received bursaries to pursue further studies through Exxaro Grootegeluk’s community bursary programme. The support reflects our commitment to nurturing local talent and shaping the next generation of leaders in mining, engineering and beyond.

Empowering top learners with digital tools

Leeuwpan Mine recognised the top 10 matriculants of 2024 in the Victor Khanye Local Municipality with laptops, bags and headphones, equipping them for the next phase of their academic journey. Supported by GoMaths, the region achieved a significant improvement in matric results, reinforcing the power of collaboration in driving excellence.

A new chapter for Olievenhoutbosch learners

A R400 100 investment enabled the construction of a fully equipped library at Olievenhoutbosch Secondary School, with an additional R20 000 for new books. For many learners living in informal settlements, the library now serves as a safe, quiet space to study, read and unlock new possibilities.

Kids on Bikes: building confidence through sport

Cookhouse became the first Eastern Cape community to launch Exxaro’s Kids on Bikes programme combining cycling skills with mentorship, discipline and youth empowerment. The initiative, supported by Cennergi and community partners, encourages healthy living while building confidence and unlocking new dreams.

Ensuring dignity for young learners

In Emakhazeni, Belfast Mine partnered with Families South Africa(FAMSA) to distribute hygiene packs to 100 socio-economically disadvantaged learners. The initiative supports health, confidence and consistent school attendance, helping young learners bring their best selves to the classroom each day.

Supporting rising young athletes

Leeuwpan Mine donated netball kits to Laerskool Eloff’s U/11 to U/13 teams, helping boost confidence, team spirit and participation in sport as part of holistic learner development.

Inspiring future engineers at Grootegeluk

Final-year WITS and UJ mining engineering students toured Grootegeluk Mine for practical exposure to planning, geology, beneficiation and sustainability. Led by women across mining disciplines to mark International Day of Women in Mining, the visit showcased operational excellence and the impact of women in the field, reinforcing Exxaro’s role in developing emerging talent in the industry.

Powering possibility at the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and IT (EBIT) Winter School

During winter, 24 matric learners from communities around Matla Mine attended the University of Pretoria’s EBIT Winter School, gaining exposure to engineering, IT and built environment fields. The experience broadened their horizons, built confidence and helped them envision new academic and career pathways.

Exploring the world of work: Matla Career Expo

Matla Mine hosted its first two-day Career Expo for Grade 9 and 11 learners, offering motivational talks, career guidance, industry exhibitions and even VR mining experiences. Learners left inspired, informed and empowered to make better subject and career choices and shape their futures.
