Mafube delivers
new road for Sikhululiwe
Mafube Coal, a 50/50 joint venture between Exxaro and Thungela, has completed a key infrastructure project that strengthens its commitment to local development. The newly tarred 3.5-kilometre road connecting Sikhululiwe Village to the R104 was officially handed over during a ceremony attended by more than 400 community members, leaders, and stakeholders.
The road replaces a gravel route that became unusable during rainy seasons, improving access to education, healthcare, and emergency services for over 400 households. The project, delivered in partnership with the Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport and the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, also created 15 local jobs during construction.
The event featured remarks from Mafube Colliery General Manager Tamara Qwatekana, Thungela’s Executive Head of Corporate Affairs Mpumi Sithole, MEC for Public Works Thulasizwe Thomo, and Executive Mayor Councillor Mhlonishwa Masilela, reflecting the collaboration behind this success.
The Sikhululiwe road stands as a symbol of progress, safety, and opportunity for the community.
