Shaping the Exxaro we want to be

We hosted our first Culture Live session online in October 2025, bringing together more than 600 Exxaro employees for an engaging and inspiring conversation about shaping a workplace where everyone feels empowered, included, and inspired.

Ilana Schwartz, Acting Group Manager for Culture and Organisational Design, opened the session by encouraging open and honest dialogue about Exxaro’s culture. She acknowledged that while our people are extraordinary, some employees have not always felt safe to speak up or supported to grow.

“This is the start of our culture reset,” she said. “Culture is not what’s written on the walls, it’s how we treat each other and create a place where everyone belongs and can be their full selves.”

Our first guest, CEO Ben Magara, shared personal stories from his career to show the power of supportive leadership. From early challenges to leading a struggling mine, he spoke about how belief in people can unlock their potential.

“Stars don’t need permission to shine,” Ben said, encouraging everyone to take ownership and contribute authentically.

Employees shared questions and ideas on leadership, inclusion, and growth. Through a live Mentimeter poll, colleagues identified five themes that describe the culture they want to build: Inclusivity, Fairness, Empowerment, Respect and Diversity.

Ben closed by reminding everyone that culture is built moment by moment, through every action and interaction: “Your voice matters. Speak up, share your ideas, and contribute to the Exxaro we want to be. We are one Exxaro, and together, we can make it work.”
