Winter safety alert: be cautious with braziers (Mbawulas) and open flames
We are now in the winter months, and during this time, fire-related incidents increase significantly. Braziers (mbawulas), candles, and lanterns are commonly used to provide warmth and light – but these open flames pose a serious risk if knocked over or left unattended.
What is a Brazier / Mbawula?
A brazier or mbawula is a metal container used to burn charcoal or wood for heating, cooking, or cultural rituals. While useful, it is not safe for indoor use and can quickly cause a fire if mishandled.
DO:
Ensure good ventilation when using braziers or generators – never use indoors

Teach children about the dangers of fire
.
Extinguish all flames before going to sleep or leaving them unattended
.
Store flammable liquids safely
.
Keep matches out of reach of children
.
DON’T:
Use a brazier indoors or in closed spaces of children
.
Leave candles or cooking appliances unattended
.
Let children play near flames
.
Use homemade or unsafe heating appliances
.
Place open flames near curtains or on unstable surfaces
.
Sleep with candles or fires still burning
.
Lock people inside a house
.
In Case of Fire:
Raise the alarm and wake up others
.
Evacuate immediately – crawl if needed
.
If your clothes are on fire: Stop, Drop and Roll
.
Only use water on burn wounds
.
Remove burnt clothing and jewellery from affected areas
.
Never re-enter a burning structure
.
Call emergency services immediately
